    Gold Coast, Australia

    Gold Coast, Australia

Some people go to the beach for the sun, the people, the beach volley and maybe a dip in salt water, but if you’re a surfer, things get much more serious than this. You start looking at other things when you think of the ideal beach, besides the nice scenery.

The waves have to be great, the weather equally so, and if there are other surfers with whom you can have some friendly competition, then all the better. Here are the top 5 surf spots in the world.

    Gold Coast, Australia

When your country is one gigantic island-continent in the middle of the ocean, you’re bound to have some really good surf spots. Gold Coast City in Queensland is the perfect destinations, especially for those who are not completely obsessed with surfing, and would like to have some fun in the traditional way too (sightseeing, going out, etc.).

There are over 70 km of beaches in Gold Coast, and  four legendary point breaks for hardcore surfers (The Spit, Main Beach, Narrowneck, Palm Beach and Mermaid beach).

    Mentawai Islands, Indonesia

The Mentawai archipelago has some 70 islands, and many of them are excellent destinations for surfers. If you are hunting for the biggest and meanest waves, head to one of the four main islands, Siberut, Sipora, North Pagi, and South Pagi, which lie between the open ocean and the mainland. The winds are very variable, and the biggest waves can be caught June through September.

    Jeffreys Bay, South Africa

Jeffreys Bay, not far from Port Elizabeth, is without a doubt one of the most famous surf spots in the world. In June, July and August, the winter months in the Southern hemisphere, the waves are especially good fr surfing. The best beaches are Super Tubes, Boneyards, Kitchen Windows, Magna Tubes, Point and Albatross.

    El Salvador

With a coast on the Pacific Ocean and a warm, sunny climate, El Salvador is a natural tourist magnet. In addition to being really quite beautiful, the beaches of El Salvador have the advantage of being relatively uncrowded, which is never something to bother a surfer. Some good spots are in El Zonte, Sunzal, and La Libertad.

    Santa Catarina, Brazil

Santa Catarina is one the most popular destinations in Brazil for Brazilians and tourists alike, because of its amazing beach resorts all over the island. From a surfer’s point of view, Santa Catarina is the best of what Brazil has to offer: consistency and a great variety of waves. One of the best beaches on the island is Joaquina Beach.
