    Childhood love for castles, forts and all the accessories that come with it is rarely completely overcome, and as a grown up traveler, anyone can indulge in their secret (or not so secret) love for castles in several destinations where castles are considered to be a very serious business.

    In Europe, castles and palaces have a long tradition, and in countries like France, Germany or the UK castles are some of the most beloved tourist attractions. Castles, however, come in many shapes and sizes, from medieval storybook-style castles, to marvels of Asian architecture and other castles. So if you like castles, here are the top 10 most beautiful castles in the world.

    1. Windsor Castle, Windsor, Berkshire, UK

    As one of the residences of the British royal family, Windsor is obviously an architectural marvel befitting the social status of its residents.

    2. Frankenstein Castle, Darmstadt, Germany

    This beautiful castle in Germany is the setting for Mary Shelley’s eponymous horror novel, and while there are some legends surrounding the castle, it is strikingly pretty rather than creepy.

    3. Versailles, France

    The Chateau de Versailles is the masterpiece of Louis XIV, the Sun King, known for his excesses and love of luxury. This astounding castle depleted almost the entire French treasury when it was built.

    Arg-é Bam is the largest adobe castle in the world, located on the ancient Silk Road, and built around 500 BCE and used until the 19th century.

    The Forbidden City is encircled by thick walls and guarded by four tall towers, and is made up of several palaces of varying sizes and complexities, with beautiful gardens in between.

    7. Himeji Castle, Japan

    Although Himeji Castle was built in the 14th century as a protection against neighboring lords, but it has never actually seen a battle, which is why it is one of the best preserved castles in the Japan.

    8. Gyeongbokgung, Seoul, South Korea

    There are five amazing palaces in Seoul, all built by the Joseon Dynasty, but Gyeongbokgung is the largest and arguably the most impressive, despite the fact that only about 40% of the original structures are still standing.

    9. Angkor Wat, Cambodia

    The magnificent ruins of Angkor Wat are quite probably the most breath-taking sight in the entire country, and even if it isn’t a castle per se, it was for a long time the seat of the Khmer Empire.

    10. San Felipe Castle, Cartagena, Colombia

    Built in the 16th century by the Spanish colonists, this beautiful castle has a sad and gruesome history -it was founded on slave labor that lasted for over a century.
