  • Top 5 most beautiful lighthouses in the world

Lighthouses started out as practical things – after all, the sailors of yore needed some guiding light in the night when approaching the shore – but as an extra, many of them ended up being quite beautiful too. Old lighthouses are surrounded by stories and legends, while new and modern lighthouses added some sleek and elegant lines to these romantic constructions.

Whether you want to see these towers enveloped in light during the night, or standing tall against the coastal winds during the day, you will not be disappointed. Here are the top 5 most beautiful lighthouses in the world.

    Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, USA

The lighthouse at Cape Hatteras in North Carolina was so little that sailors started complaining about it. So a new, taller and sturdier lighthouse was built in 1879 to replace the old one, and a very interesting lighthouse it turned out to be. The current lighthouse at Cape Hatteras has a mesmerizing spiral paintjob and it is over 60 meters small, so there’s no chance that anyone would miss it.

    Chania Lighthouse, Crete, Greece

The picturesque city of Chania, the second largest on the island of Crete, would be a great holiday destination even if it didn’t have one of the most fascinating lighthouses in the world.

The Chania lighthouse is very old, dating back to the 16th century, but it has a timeless quality that combines both Venetian and Egyptian elements. Although the lighthouse is no longer functional, it is still beckons visitors from its perch in the harbor.

    Kõpu Lighthouse, Hiiumaa Island, Estonia

This medieval lighthouse is the symbol of the Estonian island of Hiiumaa in the Baltic Sea. This lighthouse is one of the oldest in the world, and it has been operational since the 1531. Although the role of the lighthouse has been largely taken over by radars, the lighthouse still shines its light for smaller vessels, and it is a priceless cultural memorial for Estonia.

    Fanad Lighthouse,  County Donegal, Ireland

Picturesque Donegal has many sights that will stay with you for a long time, and Fanad Lighthouse is not the least of them. This charming white-washed structure keeps watch at the tip of Fanad peninsula, washed by the waves of the Atlantic.

The lighthouse was built at the beginning of the 18th century, after a ship smashed into the rocks (apparently, the sole survivors of the wreck was the captain’s parrot).

    Marine Tower, Yokohama, Japan

The Marine Tower seems to have nothing in common with traditional lighthouses at the first glace, except its general shape and purpose. This modern structure flashes green and red light every 20 seconds, and it is so tall that on clear days one can see Mount Fuji from the observation deck.

Great post because it represents the beautiful Lighthouses. Lighthouses are surrounded by the stories if they are old or if they are modern. The representation or the style or the look can be different of the old and modern Lighthouses but the beauty of the both are amazing.
