  • Cool subway stations around the world

paris metroEver since underground transport was invented, subway stations have been source of fascination for people who use them. The subway is an efficient way to transport lots of passengers in very little time from one corner of a city to another, but besides the practical reasons, subway stations are interesting places which come in many shapes and sizes.

From empty stations with scribbled walls to crowded undergrounds milling with busy people, there’s something cool about all of them. Hopping on a subways is probably not our reason for visiting a city, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t find something to enjoy about it. So here are the most interesting subways stations that you happen to find yourself in during one of your travels.

    Baker Street Station, London Underground

baker street stationThe London Underground is the first underground rapid transit system in the world, whose first section opened in 1863. The sight of Victorian ladies and gentlemen boarding the subway might seem strange, but while in other places people still got around in carriages, Londoners already used the tube. Unfortunately, the oldest and most interesting stations in London, such as British Museum, Down Street and Brompton Road have already been closed down (and some of them are even though to be haunted), you can still stop at Baker Street Station, one of the original stations opened in 1863 (it’s the perfect occasion to visit the fictional home of Sherlock Holmes too, at no. 221B).

    Mayakovskaya Sation, Moscow Metro

Mayakovskaya MoscowMayakovskaya is considered to be the most beautiful station of the Moscow Metro, and it’s easy to see why. When you step into the station you’ll feel like you’re stepping into a ball room rather than a public transport hub. This station is the best example of pre-WW2 Stalinist architecture in the art-deco style.

Beautifully patterned tiles, marble walls and pink columns trimmed with stainless steel, and lots of mosaic – that’s what awaits you in Mayakovskaya Station. So if you want to visit a Soviet-style palace but you don’t have the time, just take a trip in the Moscow metro.

Arts et Métiers Stations, Paris Métro

starts et metiers station parisIf you like steam punk, than you definitely shouldn’t miss this station. The station is located next to the Musée des Arts et Métiers, and like the musem, it is a real work of art. The station was first opened in 1904, and it used to look like a generic Paris Métro station until 1994, when it was redesigned by a Belgian comic artist in the steam-punk style (think Jules Verne – it looks a bit like the inside of Captain Nemo’s submarine).

    T-Centralen Station, Stockholm Metro

The T-Centralen is literally the hearth of the Stockholm Metro, because it is the only station where all the three metro lines cross. The blue line of the Stockholm Metro has been called the longest art gallery in the world because most o the station feature some form of art, be it paintings or sculptures. The blue line platform of the T-Centralen Station is absolutely exquisite, and it looks more like an ancient painted cave than a modern creation.

    Iidabashi Station, Tokyo

Iidabashi station tokyoI’m not about to urge you to visit a Tokyo subway station, especially during rush hour, but this one is really worth seeing, even if you will only stop and look at the subway entrance, which looks like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. The subway station itself is the epitome of modern architecture, with overhead decorations made of green metal tubes which represent the map of the Tokyo Metro.

Well maybe the Tokio subway station is cool but I am pretty sure it is crowded.. do not forget about those people wearing white gloves, hired to help the poor people to get in into the subway by pushing them… 😛
