We all know about the seven wonders of the ancient world, and surely many travelers have seen the ones that remain. And as impressive as these monuments of Antiquity are, there are many more wonders natural and artificial on the planet that are just as mind-blowing.

So it makes sense that various lists of new wonders have been put together, and some focus on wonders that are not man-made. Jeju Island in South Korea made the list of the New7Wonders of Nature just last year, so it seems like 2012 will bring a new wave of tourists to this amazing place! So hop on the bandwagon and travel to one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature: Jeju Island, South Korea.

    About the island

Jeju Island (formerly known as Cheju), is an island province off the southern coast of Korea, in the Korea Strait. The island’s nickname is The Island of the Gods thanks to its mythical origins, and considering its natural beauty, the name it very fitting.

Jeju is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Korea for both domestic and foreign tourists, so the island has a great tourist infrastructure and lots of attractions besides its natural assets, and it is famous for its weird and fun theme parks.

When visiting Jeju, expect to be plunged into a culture that is somewhat different than the mainland, especially in the smaller villages (which are even more interesting than the two major cities, Jeju City and Seogwipo).

    Natural attractions

Although the Folk Villages and the museum on Jeju Island are a great source of insights into Korean culture and are a must-see for any curious traveler, it’s the natural attractions that make this destination so loved by tourists from all over the world. In addition to the Jeju itself being one of the seven wonders of nature, the island and its volcanic tubes are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Manjanggul Lava-tube is one of theĀ  most popular attractions on the island, even if only the first kilometer of the cave is accessible to the public.

If you want to see the most unspoiled and idyllic parts of the island, explore the hiking trails of Mt. Hallasan National Park and don’t forget to visit Pillemot Cave, one of the park’s landmarks. But to see the most iconic place on the island you must go to Seongsan Ilchulbong, the Sunrise Peak, a rocky almost-island that looks like a natural castle. True to its name, the peak looks amazing at sunrise!

If you are the kind of traveler who must dip their feet into water wherever they go, then you won’t want to miss out on Iho Beach and its pretty stretches of yellow and grey sand that make the water sparkle in strange colors. Seopjikoji cape is popular with Korean tourists (it was the filming site of a famous Korean movie), and it’s a great place for a walk along the ocean. But for the ultimate watery experience, visit Cheonjiyeon Waterfall, possibly the best known attraction on the island, located at the end of a scenic walking trail.
