Anchorage Travel Guide, Alaska

Anchorage is a unique destination located in one of the world's most spectacular settings – Alaska.

It is by far Alaska's largest and most sophisticated, cosmopolitan city and attracts fine restaurants and pricey shops, first-rate entertainment, and world-class sporting events. Sled-dog races are still among the most revered events held here, moose often roam along city bike trails, and spectacular country is just a short drive away.

Anchorage is the perfect base camp for Alaska adventure that thrills visitors of all interests and abilities. Its wildlife viewing at close proximity in and around the city is a year-round attraction. It is a place that makes it hard on one to decide what to do first: explore an Alaska glacier, hike to a mountain or stroll along Anchorage scenic trails, cruise in comfort or paddle along in a sea kayak, catch salmon just steps away from your hotel or go fishing in a nearby lake. No matter what you choose, you’ll have an experience difficult to forget.

Surrounded by vast landscape Anchorage astounds all types of wilderness explorers with spectacular sightseeing opportunities: you can go bear viewing, bird watching, whale watching and watch for other Alaska wildlife, including moose, sheep, black bear, brown bear, grizzlies, orca whales and more. It’ll be definitely something different if so far you’ve seen animals only in a zoo or on TV!

You can choose to visit Anchorage in summer when it blooms with brilliant flowers, the daylight lasts for long hours and the sound of music from numerous outdoor festivals pleases your ears, but Anchorage is truly a wonderland in the winter.

If you’re in for something unique you must see the Aurora Borealis, glowing, dancing curtains of light, nature’s perfect backdrop for dancing northern lights that cover Anchorage's bright starry nights. They can be incredibly bright and fast moving and they change shape quickly. The most common color is a brilliant yellow-green but you can also see red, blue and purple patterns. You can get the most of it during fall, winter and spring and the best displays tend to be accompanied by sub-zero temperatures and moonless skies. Those who want to see the Northern Lights should plan to stay for more than one day as it is not sure they’ll get to see it. Some days are better than others so it depends on how lucky you are or on good planning.

Anchorage is a feast for the senses, it offers a combination of native culture, a variety of annual festivals, a large local music scene, a thriving downtown and restaurants that cater to the most discriminating palate.

So don’t wait and plan the ultimate trip to Anchorage, Alaska. Take in amazing views and enjoy first-class lodging, dining, shopping and nightlife.
