Pittsburgh Travel Guide, Pennsylvania
The city of Pittsburgh is settled in the southwest Pennsylvania, at the confluence of Allegheny and Monongahela rivers. At its beginnings the city was a trading post, but later it developed into an industrial town due to the iron and steel resources it had. This industry with all the pollution it brought made people call the city the "Smoky City”. But things changed for the better and signs of the heavy industry are present mostly in the history of the city as now modern glass office towers, 20th-century architectural masterpieces, modern skyscrapers and contemporary sculptures make up the city’s profile.
Today the city is one of the country’s most livable cities with beautiful sights, a peninsula that forms the downtown area also called the Golden Triangle, a beautiful park named by many the Point because of its location, the Three Rivers Stadium called this way due also to its position. These three rivers that slice the city give it a marvelous natural beauty following you everywhere you go in the city; their sight gives a sense of calm and continuity. For a birds eye view of the three rivers you can choose between going to the park and Mt. Washington where you can get by taking one of the city’s restored cable cars. But the best choice would be the second one as the views are breathtaking. You can go to one of the restaurants and while having a nice meal you can see the rivers unite, enjoy the city's unique skyline, spot the stadium and maybe decide watch a match if you are a sports fan. You will enjoy the city's rich tradition of football, baseball, and hockey.
The locals are warm people and are proud of the city where they have grown their roots. The city’s streets are full of life especially when the fairs are held in the fashionable neighborhoods like the South Side, Shadyside, and the Strip.
The Strip District is the hearth of Pittsburgh’s nightlife, with many bars and nightclubs and the South Side is another lively nightlife district.
There is no sign of decay as restaurants took the place of old warehouses. Pittsburgh is a great place to get your next meal and its restaurants want everyone to walk away happy, and full. Whether you're looking for a great steak house, a sushi bar, first-class Italian cuisine, or just a giant burger, the restaurants are sure to satisfy; you'll have few problems finding somewhere to eat good food in a fun atmosphere at reasonable prices.
Getting around is not a problem as the Port Authority operates daily bus and trolley service and there’s the T a subway you can take to go to the business district and the best part is that it is for free.
You'll have a hard time finding a friendlier city anywhere in the country. Pittsburgh today can offer you a lot of entertainment opportunities, with various outdoor activities on its rivers and in its parks, unique shopping downtown and in the suburbs, and dining in some of the state's most interesting restaurants.
