Geography

Situated two meters above sea level, Bangkok is located in the heart of Thailand. The city is situated in the plains of River Chao Pharaya. Bangkok is marked with artificial and natural canals traversing along the length and breadth of the city. It is a tropical region with high temperature and humidity.

People and Culture

The people of Bangkok are warm and friendly and they take great pride in their monarchy.  Bangkok has a diversified culture. Three important races - Thais Chinese immigrants and Malay -- dominate the city.  Thais form 80% of the population. Then, there are the Chinese immigrants Malays and tribes like Khmers, Mons and other hill tribes.

Taking a close look at the class distribution of the people of Bangkok one can see that the extreme rich and the very poor populace are the Thais. The minorities and foreigners form the middle class of Bangkok. The Chinese are seen to be engaged more in business than the other races.

Coming to religion, the majority of the people practice Theravada Buddhism. Islam is followed by about five per cent of the population. Other religions followed are Christianity and Hinduism. Bangkok’s culture is centuries old. Today it is a blend of the age old traditional aspects and modernity. Known for its unique culture, the Thai culture has been handed over through generations among the races.

Architecture

Bangkok has a splendid architecture. Its architecture is a blend of modern and contemporary influence. The temples boast the most spectacular Buddhist architecture whereas the sky shooting buildings give a modern feel to the city. The early architecture of the city has a Khemur influence. The buildings have a touch of Chinese style in exterior decorations while you can see the Italian influence in old houses in Bangkok.

Infrastructure

Since 1960s, Bangkok has seen rapid urbanization and industrialization.  Foreign investments have helped the city to see new horizons of development and modernization. From road to air transport, the city has an excellent network. The city has a long coastline. There are around 122 ports presently serving the city. The city has excellent facilities of telecommunication.

One of the best places to visit. Bangkok is cultural, diverse, interesting, amazing, friendly, and really lots of fun. Make sure you stay away from the bad places though... There are beautiful sights for those who want to admire the Thai architecture and traditions. It is also the paradise for...
  • MadSuhBack again in Bangkok >> added on September 10, 2007, by MadSuh
Arriving in Bangkok felt really good, especially because our VIP 24 seat bus ride didn’t really turn out that great. I could barely sleep because we were sitting in the back and the road was quite bumpy. Anyhow, we got to our hotel alright and checked in. The hotel was really nice and hip,...
  • MadSuhFrom Koh Tao via Chumpon to Bangkok >> added on September 4, 2007, by MadSuh
The last few days on Koh Tao were beautiful. We met some nice people there, a transvestite who was doing Maria's hair and gave Irina a face mask and manicure. Some nice people we met over at our favorite restaurant and some people we met while being out at night. The most fun part was probably...

  • MadSuhBest time to visit >> added on December 14, 2009, by MadSuh
Visiting Bangkok is like visiting any other large city in the world. There is always something going on. The best time to visit Bangkok is during the late fall and early winter months. Even though you really don't spend too much time outside while in Bangkok, it's much more enjoyable when it's not rainy season. During the rainy season, you get masses of water pouring down, you won't get cold, because even the rain is warm, but you'll be soaking wet.

Also, taking pictures is easier in the dry season, the sky is blue and not hazy all the time.

Finally, go to Bangkok whenever you like, it's always fun, but if you can manage to go during the dry season, I strongly recommend you doing that.
  • MadSuhPublic Transportation >> added on November 9, 2009, by MadSuh
While in Bangkok there are several choices of how to get around. Tuc Tuc, Taxi, Sky Train. I personally prefer the Sky Train as this is usually the best option (fast, clean).

When the Sky Train is not available, use a Taxi, they are everywhere, they are cheap and they are usually air conditioned. If you are at one of the tourist attractions you should always ask for 'meter' prices, so that the taxi meter calculates the cost. Everywhere else, you will not get ripped off.

While Tuc Tucs look fun, it's not a good option, as they are noisy, slow, not air conditioned and you are constantly breathing bad air. They are also not much cheaper than regular cabs. Finally, do not take any 'free' Tuc Tucs' as they will take you many shops where they try to get you to buy things, it's not fun and people do get ripped off a lot.
  • MadSuhBed Supper Club >> added on September 23, 2009, by MadSuh
This club must be one of your favorites if you know bangkok nightlife a little. It's super stylish and also quite expensive. The Club looks like a space ship from the outside ... and well ... I guess from the inside as well.
There are some large beds sat up so you can actually lie down in the club, it's basically an oversized couch with huge pillows - cool!

Go there on Wednesdays when it's models night. Models get in for free and you are bound to see some good looking ladies there.

If you go there during evening hours you can grab dinner which is a mix of Thai and European dishes smartly blended together. The staff is dressed like some sexy space ship crew.
