A little more of Bangkok, Thailand

I didn't do a whole lot yesterday except walking around a lot. I met an interesting scotish guy who lives in Japan. We had a nice chat over dinner and then he was off to the airport. I love the fact that when you are traveling around in Thailand, you constantly meet strangers. Anyhow, I did walk around some more around Siam Square and one of the funniest things I saw was aerobics right next to the street. I took a picture, but you really can't make anything out as it was already getting too dark outside. The area around Siam is super busy, and super noisy. Two BTS lines meet here and there is a ton of traffic. So these crazy health concious people are hopping around on a sidewalk (10m wide and about 100m long), there is an instructor in the front who is standing elevated about 10 feet over the crowd. He is all sweaty and so are his loyal follower. It was a truly bizzare picture because with the noise, the dust, the smog and the trains flying by over your head, the least I could think of was jumping around with another 100 or so people at 35 degrees and almost 100% humidity. I mean they might have as well go running in the park while smoking a cigarette at the same time. Bangkok, baby... you will always see the most weird things here and that's what makes it so exciting. I went home shortly after my aerobics experience to take a quick shower and then leave again to meet up with two friends. They were having dinner at the Novotel. They have a really nice buffet there and maybe when I get back from the islands I want to check it out myself. We didn't spend too much time there, just chatted along and laughing about old times. Afterwards I went home again, bought a fake DVD grabbed a snack and went back to my room. Irina and Maria are arriving today and I had to get up at 5am for that. Now I am sitting here in the coffee shop and I am waiting because the airplane is late by an hour. By the way, check the pics, I had to take a picture of the menu... check out where it says "hot coffee" and "cold coffee" yummy, I could not think of anything more delicious than "cold coffee". This must be the only place selling that:) Ok, gotta go now... the airplane should be arriving now.

Bangkok History

The city of Bangkok was initially used as a tiny trading center and port on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. It earlier used to serve the Ayutthaya Kingdom which was the precursor of modern Thailand and ruled from 1350 to 1767. It is often believed that the name of the city came from either Bang Makok where bang was the Central Thai name meant for towns and/or villages situated on the bank of a river. Makok was the Thai name of Spondias pinnata, Spondias mombin or Elaeocarpus hygrophilus which are plants. Another view is that the name originated from Bang Koh, ko which means “island.'...
