Cleveland History

The City of Cleveland obtained its name on July 22, 1976. The naming of the city took place after the surveyors of the Connection Land Company started laying out Western Reserve of Connecticut into townships. It was during this time when they named “Cleveland”, their capital city after General Moses Cleveland, their leader. The first man to settle in the city was Lorenzo Carter. He built his own cabin on the banks of the River Cuyahoga.
