This part of the city is special in many ways. First, it is one the most oldest parts of Lisbon, being first inhabited by Visigoths in the 5th century then turned into an upper-class area by the Moors later on. However, many earthquakes shook the whole are, crumbling down the churches and the homes of rich people, so this 'destroyed' part of the city became the residents of fishermen and working-class people. Having such a varied history, the Alfama conserved its traditional and more Portuguese aspect, which was what drew us to it in the first place.

A tip for the visitor: wear comfortable shoes and clothes because the Alfama is an uphill and it has steep, narrow streets.
