One of the grandest buildings in Havana, the Capitolio looks like a twin-building of the Capitol in Washington, DC, though it is a bit taller and longer than the latter. It's architecture is beautiful and stunning and being such a grand building, you can see it almost from everywhere in the city.

An interesting thing about the building is that inside the main hall, embedded in the floor is a replica of a 24/25-karat diamond. What makes this stone such a valuable piece is that every road that drives out of Havana is measured in distance from this diamond. Pretty amazing! :)

From the entryway you get to the Salon de los Pasos Perdidos ( which means Room of the Lost Steps) which got its name from the room's unusual acoustics. In the middle of the 'salon' stands a 17m tall bronze statue of a Roman Goddess, covered with golden leaves, representing the Statue of the Republic. You shouldn't miss visiting this amazing building!

Havana History

Although Havana was not immediately popular due to its lack of riches like the silver and gold that was being found in other areas of Latin America, it did become extremely wealthy due to its excellent port position.  Havana is located across from the Gulf of Mexico and it has access to the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf Stream.  This location was crucial at that time because Habana connected the [...]
