If you're near to Mykene, you should really go there. It's a well preserved antique Greek city, digged out by the german Heinrich Schliemann in the 19th century (yes, he is the same archeologist who discovered Troy, so you should take a look at Mykene as well). The famous golden mask of Agamemnon was found here. Unfortunately, all the interesting things are in the national museum of Athens. To complete a visit of Mykene, I recommend to visit this museum, for there are still some very nice things you should see if you are interested in the ancient Greeks.

The ruins of Knossos, the legendary palace of Minosis close to present day Iraklion. In the Bronze Age, Knossos was the most important human settlement on the island, and archaeologists also believe that it was an important port. One of the charms of the ancient palace is the myth of the Minotaur who has supposedly roamed the labyrinth built by the Minoan king. The city of Iraklion was founded in 824 AD, but not by Greeks but the Saracens who were exiled from Al-Andalus, in modern-day... Read more »
