Situated somewhere in the north eastern coast of Yucatan Peninsula, Isla Mujeres is actually the name of an island on which the town of Isla Mujeres is located. Quintana Roo is a state in Mexico which is divided into eight municipalities and the island of Isla Mujeres is one of those eight municipalities. The meaning of this name is Island of Women. The island of Isla Mujeres is famous amongst those tourists who do not want to face the hustle and bustle of metro cities. This lush green environment of Isla Mujeres, with the presence of almost every beauty that nature can produce, is a place worth visiting if you really want to take some rest from your busy life.

The city of Isla Mujeres is situated in the proximity of Cancún and is around 12 kilometers away from Cancún. The city of Isla Mujeres is also situated in the proximity of Cuba. This proximity with Cuba has been a major reason why the Cubans started to move into the country of United States. The island of Isla Mujeres was used as the joining point between Cuba and United States.

The size of the island isn’t huge. Isla Mujeres is around 700 meters in width and around 7 kilometers in length. As per the census of year 2005 the population for the city of Isla Mujeres was around 11500 inhabitants only. On the other hand the population for the municipality of Isla Mujeres was around 13500 inhabitants as per the same census of year 2005. The area of expansion for the city of Isla Mujeres is around 1100 kilometer square which is actually enough as this city is just a small island.

It was the Spanish Army leader, Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba, who named this island as Isla Mujeres (which meant Island of Women) due to the presence of multiple female goddesses in the island. This was done somewhere in the 16th century when the Spanish Army had freshly arrived into this city.

The locals for the city of Isla Mujeres mostly use moped scooters, golf carts, or taxis as their major vehicle of transportation from one section of the city to the other section.
