Gyor is the sixth largest city in Hungary and it is the capital of the county of Gyor-Moson-Sopron. It is also one of the primary regional centers of the country which makes it the most notable city of the Northwestern Region of Hungary. Although it is one of the regional centers in Hungary, Gyor does not have its own airport. The nearest is the airport in Bratislava, Slovakia. Some airlines serving the airport offer budget flights and passengers can ride a bus or rent a private car from there to Gyor. The travel time takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes to 2 hours and passport is not required when travelling between borders.
Another way to reach the city is by train. Railways in Gyor are served by the InterCity trains which connect it to Budapest and the travel time is 1 hour and 15 minutes. It also has trains that travel to and from Bratisvala, Slovakia and Vienna, Austria and will take only about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Since Gyor is located on the shores of Moson-Danube, it has waterways linked to Budapest and Vienna so travelers can take a journey by boat. There are also many buses that arrive daily from the mentioned cities. When having a tour around the city center, tourists can just walk around because it is not very big and most of the attractions are within walking distance.

The weather in Gyor is characterized by rainy spring and autumn, snowy and chilly winter, and hot but occasionally showery summer. The hottest month is July when the highest temperature averages at 26 degrees Celsius. The coldest month is January when the lowest temperature is -4 degrees Celsius. The wettest month is June with a precipitation averaging at 64mm and there are around nine days of rainfall that are more than 1mm. Most tourists prefer to visit the city during summer, as the weather is mild and bright.
Gyor Travel Guide – Events and Festivals
As a cultural hub of the Northwestern Region of Hungary, Gyor hosts loads of events and festivals. Since most tourists visit the city during summer, the biggest and most renowned festival of Gyor happens in this season. The Four Season Summer Festival starts from the second week of June until the last week of August and it includes 4 major activities. The event begins with an opening concert with performances from the city’s most famous singers.
The second big event within the festival is the Dance Biennale with Gyor’s Ballet Group taking part. Different dance genres such as Classical Dance, Folk Dance, and Alternative Dance can be witnessed. The third major event is the Musical Summer evening held on the banks of Raab River. A water stage is set up where traditional folk performances and other entertainments are shown. Side by side with the Four Summer Festival is the Wine-Days, Wine Chevalier and Gastronomical Festival that offers the audience a taste of different wines and food. The Festival closes with a mega concert held on the last week of August.
