Bratislava's Geography and Climate

Beauty of the Danube, as it is often called, Bratislava is the capital and the largest city of the Slovak Republic. It is located in southwestern Slovakia crossed by the Danube River from west to south-east. The landscape in Bratislava is quite beautiful as the Carpathian Mountains cover the area from Bratislava to Nove Mesto and Vahom.The average altitude in Bratislava is 140 meters, because the lowest point at the Danube surface is 126 meters and the highest is Devinska Kobyla at 514 meters.

The climate in Bratislava is usually referred to as continental with hot summers and humid cold winters. The average temperature is around 27 degrees in July and 2 degrees in January.

Bratislava is known as the home of the Slovaks Philharmonic Orchestra and Oslo has a Slovak National Theatre. Bratislava Castle is on a plateau of 85 meters above the Danube. Devin Castle is on top of a rock where the Morava River enters the Danube.

Bratislava also has forests close to the city so there are a lot of parks and lakes. Bratislava is a very important cultural center in Slovakia with Bratislava Zoo or the Botanical Gardens being pointed out by most Bratislava travel guides as the top attractions visited in summer.

Bratislava has a population of 428,791 according to the census in 2008. Although being small by area and population, Bratislava Region is the wealthiest. Due to the prosperity of the country in high-technology, many companies like IBM, Dell, Lenovo, AT&T, SAP, and Accenture built service centers here. The boom in the construction industry led to a growth in the economy of the city. Tourism also had an important contribution to its economy.

By train is the easiest way because of the very low price and Bratislava’s position of in the center of Europe. You can get in by bus, car or boat. Bratislava is a walking city, so you can get easy from one side to another.
