Brownsville, TX US - Overview

Brownsville is a city located in Texas, United States and it is the 15th largest city in Texas and also the 130th largest in the whole US. The estimated population of the city as per the census of July 1, 2007 is approximately 172,806.

Brownsville has a favorable climate and the vegetation is commonly subtropical broadleaf evergreen plants. Brownsville is also home to some of the famous universities and colleges such as the University of Texas at Brownsville, Texas Southmost College and the South Texas Vocational Technical Institute. Normally, the primary and secondary schools in Brownsville are under the Brownsville Independent School District and the Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District.

The city of Brownsville is connected to other major cities of the United States through highways like U.S Route 77, U.S Route 83 and U.S Route 281. A large part of Brownsville is also covered by Brownsville Urban System (BUS) that has 14 buses running through 11 different routes.  The city also has its own airport called the Brownsville/ South Padre Island International Airport. The airport offers general aviation which is served by only one commercial airline called the Continental Airlines. Depending on the day of the week, Continental Airlines provide seven regular flights to Houston-Intercontinental.

The city of Brownsville is filled with well-established art galleries and a number of museums where not only the art of Brownsville and Mexico but also popular arts from around the world are featured. The Brownsville Heritage Complex and the Little Graceland Museum are places where most of the tourists make their visit. Brownsville offers many local attractions such as the Gladys Porter Zoo, Port of Brownsville and Camille Lightner Playhouse.

Gladys Porter Zoo is a famous zoological and botanical park with over 375,000 annual visitors. The zoo is home for more than 400 animal species including 47 endangered species.

The city is also known for its huge shopping Mall like the Sunrise Mall and the Amigoland Mall.

One of the most popular vacation destinations in Brownsville is the South Padre Island which is a barrier island situated in the Cameron County of Texas.

Brownsville city offers affordable as well as luxury hotels for not-so-rich visitors and wealthy tourists to enjoy their holidays. Some of the reputed hotels in Brownsville are Holiday Inn Brownsville, Colonial Motel, Palace Inn Motel and Homewood Suites.

Brownsville is also famous for its nightlife, Bars and restaurants that offer thrilling experience to its visitors. Arturo’s Lounge, Bar Struck and Bigo’s Bar & Grill are names of some of the places where a visitor can get an experience of Brownsville’s nightlife.
