Calcutta Sights and Landmarks Guide, India

There are lots and lots to explore in Calcutta (now called Kolkatta). One of the most popular places here are the Dakshineshwar temple and the Belur Math. These are among the most sacred pilgrimage sights for the Hindus. You can take ferry rides to Dakshineshwar temple and Belur math.

Another most visited site in Calcutta is Fort William. This fort is located on the bank of the Hooghly River and is named after King William III of England. The fort was established during the British reign in India in the year 1696. The fort is the witness of the famous Black Hole tragedy.

One cannot miss visiting the Victoria memorial when in Calcutta. Victoria Memorial is a museum designed during the British reign in India. The credit of the great architecture goes to the famous British architect Sir William Emerson. The museum takes you way back in the past where you can experience the glorious past of the great country. The 184 ft tall edifice is worth visiting.

 Then there is the Marble palace that was built by Rajendra Mallick in the year 1835. It is an art gallery portraying exclusive pieces of art, portraits and sculptures. Reuben's masterpieces are something that attracts maximum visitors to the place.

 Octerloney Monument, or the Shaheed Minar situated near Esplanade is another popular location among tourists visiting Calcutta. This spectacular monument was erected in the year 1848 and marks the symbol of victory in Nepal war. The foundation of the monument is of the Egyptian style, whereas the dome of the structure is of Syrian and Turkish designs.

Then you have the Botanical Garden which has species of plants that you cannot find in any part of the world. Another attraction is the Sundarbans wild life reserve, which has many endangered species and you can find the rarest royal Bengal tigers in this reserve.
