Dresden Sights – Historical and Cultural Landmarks

The city of Dresden boasts a number of remarkable historical and cultural sites. Tourists will definitely enjoy exploring these landmarks that the city has to offer.

Zwinger Palace. One of the most stunning attractions of Dresden is this palace constructed from 1710-1728. Inside the palace, tourists will find Old Masters Picture Gallery, Armory, Porcelain Collection, Mathematics and Physics Salon, and a Zoological Museum.

Semper Opera House. Constructed from 1838-1841 by Gottfried Semper, this opera house caught fire in 1869. It was reconstructed in 1871 by Gottfried’s son Manfred. Semper Opera House was restored in High Renaissance style.

Dresden Sights – Recreation and Leisure Sites

The places for leisure and recreation in Dresden are both enticing and enjoyable. Tourists have many attractions of this kind to choose from depending on their liking. Nevertheless, these Dresden Sights are guaranteed to give any visitor a grand time.

The Elbe Meadows. This attraction makes the city distinctive amongst the cities in Europe. The extensive meadows along the river offer both the citizens and tourists recreation and relaxation. The Elbe meadows are especially popular during summer as they serve as a backdrop for barbecuing, chatting, flirting, and playing music. The meadows are also used as venues for festivals and film nights. Near the river, a number of restaurants and wine gardens are available.

Zoo Dresden. This is known as the 4th oldest zoo in Germany. It is found on the southern part of the Great Garden Park and first opened in 1861. The zoo has approximately 3,000 animals of roughly 400 species. Many Asian animals are also found here. The zoo does not just provide a display of animals, but it also has an educational institution in natural sciences.

Dresden Sights – Museums

Dresden doesn’t just take pride of its historical and cultural landmarks, the city can also brag about its comprehensive museums displaying works of arts and technology.

The Green Vault. This museum takes pleasure in being one of Europe’s most extravagant chambers. Going to the Green Vault is like hitting two birds with one stone since it has two different exhibition areas: the New Green Vault and the Historic Green Vault. Tourists’ eyes will pop out with the outstanding artworks made of precious gems, ivory, gold, silver, bronze and amber.

Albertinum. This was constructed by Carl Adolf Canzler from 1884-1887. It was originally built as a museum and archive. Today, Albertinum displays the Picture Gallery “New Masters”, the Numismatic Collection, Sculpture Collection, and some special exhibitions.
