The city of Colombo happens to be the former capital city for the country of Sri Lanka, the current administrative capital of Sri Lanka being the nearby city of Sri Jayewardenepura - Kotte. The city of Colombo happens to be one of the fast running metro cities in the country of Sri Lanka, which presents an awesome mixture of trendy life with the availability of different historical monuments. The word Colombo was inspired from Kolon thota which happens to be a Sinhalese word. This word means Port on River Kelani and hence suits the city of Colombo the most due to its proximity with the River Kelani.

The annual average temperature for the city of Colombo is around 27 degree Celsius. The city of Colombo is amongst those cities that do no experience any huge changes in its climate throughout the year. The maximum temperature is touched during the months of March and April when the temperature can touch the heights of 31 degree Celsius. One can expect a major change in the regular temperature of Colombo from the months of May to August and between from the months of October to January as these are the times when the city experiences the monsoon season. This is the season when the city of Colombo experiences heavy rainfall. Average rainfall for the city of Colombo is around 2500 mm every year.

As per the census of year 2000, the population for the city of Colombo was around 650000 inhabitants. Out of this total population, around 42 percent inhabitants are Sinhalese, 29 percent are Tamils, around 24 percent are Moors, and rests are various other ethnic groups. Due to the huge population, the city of Colombo was ranked as the most populated city in the country of Sri Lanka.

As the city of Colombo was the administrative capital for the country of Sri Lanka for many years, the head offices of many huge organizations are in the city of Colombo itself thus strengthening the economical backbone of this fast moving city. In the center of the city the second tallest building is situated which is named as The World Trade Center. This building is the second tallest building when compared to all other buildings in South Asia.
