Ciudad Juarez Travel Guide, Mexico

Ciudad Juárez is a famous city of Chihuahua (a state of North Mexico with its area being larger than that of United Kingdom). In olden days, Ciudad Juárez was called El Paso del Norte but nowadays it is called Juárez in day to day language. Ciudad Juárez has a population of over 1.5 million inhabitants. It is located on Rio Grande (or Rio Bravo in Mexican) which is one of the largest river systems of United States.

One of the largest bi-national metropolitan populations in the world lives in the combined area of Ciudad Juárez and El Parso (which is an area in Texas, United States). It is estimated that these two areas have a combined population of around 2.5 million inhabitants. Ciudad Juárez has the fastest growing population of this planet. The 5.3 percent growth that was experienced in a 10 year period between 1990 and 2000 is a proof to the statement that Ciudad Juárez has the fastest growing population. In 2000, the growth in the world population was 1.14 percent while Ciudad Juárez experienced a 5.3 percent growth. See the difference? The growth in population of Ciudad Juárez is bigger than what the state of Chihuahua or Mexico experienced in those years.

Around 60,000 migrants are said to cross the El Parso - Ciudad Juárez border every year due to the growing economy of Ciudad Juárez. Foreign Direct Investment, a famous magazine which is run by Financial Times Group, called Ciudad Juárez ‘The City of Future’ in the year 2008. This reflects the kind of economical growth which Ciudad Juárez is experiencing.

More than half of its population is European. French, German, Spanish, and Italian migrants comprise this European chunk. The immigrants from South Mexico are not considered in the population of Ciudad Juárez as they usually live in the municipality of Ciudad Juárez and not in the city proper.

Mexico has always been crazy about soccer and so is Ciudad Juárez. Indio de Ciudad Juárez is the name of the local soccer team of Ciudad Juárez. Other popular games of Ciudad Juárez are tennis, basketball, baseball, and American football. Mountain bike race is also a popular sport in Ciudad Juárez with many competitions being organized every year.

The turn off for the tourists can be the high crime graph of the city. Ciudad Juárez is said to have faced the most number of murders amongst all the cities of Mexico.
