Salem Travel Guide, India

Salem is a city located in the south Indian State of Tamil Nadu. Salem is situated right on the base of Yercaud Hills and hence a majestic view of the city can be experienced from the hill top. Yercaud is around 1600 meter high hill. Kiliyur Falls located very near to this place is a site worth watching.

As per population, Salem bags the number fifth position after the famous cities of Chennai on 1st place, Coimbatore on 2nd, Madurai on 3rd, and Trichy on the 4th. Salem is also considered to be part of the Coimbatore and Tirupur regions which are together called as Kongu Nadu.

 Salem had the population of around 750000 inhabitants as per the consensus of the year 2001. This was the population of the Urban Agglomeration of Salem. This population can be divided as follows: Kondalampatti (with around 17000 inhabitants), Salem Municipal Corporation (with around 700000 inhabitants), Kannankurichi (with around 15000 inhabitants), Mallamooppampatti (with around 7000 inhabitants), Neykkarappatti (with around 10000 inhabitants), and Dalavaipatti (with around 6000 inhabitants).

 Like most of South India, Salem also has a literacy rate which is way above the literacy rate of the nation. India has the literacy rate of around 60 percent while the literacy rate of Salem is around 77 percent.

This huge literacy rate has attracted many industries towards Salem as these companies are easily able to find the educated people they look for. Some of these famous industries are: Chemplast Sanmar, MALCO, SISCOL, Salem Steel Plant (also known as SAIL), Tata Refractories, Burn Standard & Co, TANMAG, Dalmia Magnesite, Indian-Oil Bottling Plant, SAGOSERVE, Kali Aerated WaterWorks, Porkulan Technology, Kaliswari, Arun ice cream, Madras cements, PowerGrid.

The reason behind the higher literacy rate of Salem is the number of quality engineering colleges and other higher education institutions which are situated in this city. Salem has around 3 universities, 10 engineering institutions, 18 science and arts institutions, 11 government aided schools, 37 privately owned schools, 3 residential schools, and 2 alumni associations.

All in all, the highly educated city of Salem has around 95 educational institutions all working hard to take the city of Salem to the next level.
