If we move, towards north-east from the populated city of New Delhi, we would come across an ancient city that was an important center of Buddhism in the Mauryan era and is now popular for its army cantonment area. Unquestionably, the city under discussion is Meerut.

 History 

According to Hindu mythology, the city was also the home town of Mandodari, Ravana’s wife, and probably owes its name to this strange association.  However, the city gained popularity during the mutiny of 1857, when the revolt first began in this sacred town and spread across the nation.

 The population 

A prosperous and large city in the north, Meerut boasts of a population of around 1.2 million in Uttar Pradesh and forms a crucial educational center in the entire north-western India. It can be proudly declared that even with a bulk of minority population residing here, Meerut, India, is one of the booming cities in terms of business and industrialization in the country today. Few of the businesses that are on a flourishing front in the city are the construction business, the sale of musical instruments and sports goods and quite interestingly jewellery designing.

With such a vast expanse of business and job securities, Meerut is bound to be one of the most sought of town for settlement in the Indian map. Moreover, if you want to plan an exciting vacation, Meerut also offers several visiting sites with preferably seasonal climatic conditions. In other words, you can get a taste of perfect weather in Meerut according to the changing seasons - summer, monsoon or winter. However, people with a flair for warmer climate are definitely at more comfort in the city. Also, if you plan a settlement in Meerut it is beneficial for you to know that the city provides excellent health and educational services. The Cantonment General Hospital and the Ch. Charan Singh University are excellent examples of this flourishing city.

 Located between the rivers Ganga and Jamuna, Meerut forms one of the most important tourist destinations in the state of Uttar Pradesh. A luxuriant picturesque embodies this beautiful town with several tourist attractions. Few of the notable tourist attractions include the famous the Chandi Devi and Manasa Devi temples, along with the Jain temples of Hastinapur, the Jama Masjid, Shaheed Samarak, Suraj Kund, Barnawa, Parikishatgarh, Bale Miyan Dargah and the Sardhana. Sardhana is particularly famous for its catholic church and finally there is also the most popular IIT Roorkee.  

Apart from these, Meerut is also known for its exquisite sweet shops and these days also for its recently built shopping malls and commercial complexes. The city also hosts a number of traditional bazaars that forms a delight for the shopping freaks. Meerut has also turned into a vital media center especially for its weakness at communalism. However, in recent years, the city has displayed immense progress and has tuned out to be the emerging economic center in northern India.
