The name of Kozhikode is a mix of two different words Koyil (which means palace) and Kodu (which means fortified). The other name Calicut is said to be the anglicized version of the real name Kozhikode. Theory says that Calicut used to be a very famous port which was used by the foreign traders for trading purposes. During those days there was a fort surrounding the port. This fort was called as Koyil (meaning palace) and Kotta (meaning fort) and this has to be the reason why the city got this name of Kozhikode.
