Indore is not the real capital of Madhya Pradesh but it is considered to be the commercial capital for the state of Madhya Pradesh. Indore did enjoy the status of Capital for the princely state of Indore which existed during the British Rule, but soon after the Indian Independence all the princely states were dissolved and the state of Madhya Pradesh was born. Indore is now a city in Madhya Pradesh. During the British Rule Indore was also the summer capital of the Central India Agency that was run by the British Rulers.

Indore is said to have received its name from the Indreshwar temple. It was in 1741 that the land owners and other notable inhabitants built a fort near this temple. This was done as the land around the temple was surrounded by rivers from all sides making it a safe place, protected from enemies. Initially the city was given the name of Indrapur, but later it was changed to the more easily pronounceable Indore.

Within the border of Indore there are 7 railway stations. There are many major highways that pass through the city of Indore like National Highway Number 59, 3, 27, 17 (NH 59, NH 3, NH 27, NH 17).

Due to its tourism industry, Indore has been well connected to the rest of the country by all kinds of means of transport. Indore is famous for its local bus transport which is amongst the best public transports. The local bus transport of Indore was also called the first major modern bus transport of India and has received huge press coverage.

Along with this famous fort and the temple there are many other sights of Interest in the city which are enough to attract tourists on regular basis.

Some notable tourist hot spots of the city are Krishnapura Chhatri, Lal Bagh Palace, Shree Sansthan Bada Rawala, Devlalikar Kala Vithika, Indore Zoo, Indore Museum, ISKCON Temple, Khajrana Ganesh temple, the temple of Janapao¸ Patal Pani, Kajligarh, Sitlamata Falls, Thincha Falls, Ahinsa Parvat, Dream World, and Mhow etc.
