Accra Sights and Landmarks Guide, Ghana

Accra has a lot of wonderful sights for travelers to see.  One of these is the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, which is the grave site of Kwame Nkrumah who was the first president of Ghana.  The grave is placed in a quiet Memorial Park, along with a museum that tells about his life.

Right next to the memorial is the Arts Center. The Arts Center is actually a big market where there are stalls that sell crafts and arts from Ghana.  There are drums, numerous types of colorful cloths, which include the Ashante kente, as well as fine wood carvings.  The prices, however, can be high in comparison to what can be found anywhere else in Ghana, so it is important to bargain a lot for the piece you want.  Aside from the drum makers, not too many demonstrations are held on how all of the beautiful crafts and arts are created.

Independence Square is a celebration center that is dominated by the memorial of 3 natives of Ghana who were killed during colonial times and the independence arch. During national holidays, which include May Day (May 1st) and Independence Day (March 6th), there are parades and ceremonies held here.

Another sight to see is the Osu Castle. This is a castle that can be compared to the Cape Coast and Elmina Castles.  Unfortunately, though, nobody can just walk up to the castle for a visit.  There are meetings held inside and if a reservation is made, tourists can enter.  This historical monument welcomes travelers of all races and ages to visit.

The Makola Market is a great place to see in the area of Greater Accra, and it is the most attractive and colorful place to visit in Africa.  Makola Market is a modern place where women go to sell their goods.

The University of Ghana is a perfect display of Japanese architecture.  Also, this is where you can see all of the students walking around, on their way to higher learning.

The Memorial Center of Du Bois is a center that is based on Pan-African Culture, and as it is an inspiration to a lot of people, the Center is now the home of a manuscript gallery and a research library.  It is also the grave site of a well known African-American scholar and his wife.

Another great architectural art work is the National Theatre, which was constructed by a Chinese contractor, as part of an attempt to raise the patronage of performing art in the country.
