Hanover History, Germany
Hanover located in Germany is known to be the capital of the Lower Saxony’s federal state and considered the center of Northern Germany. However, before getting to this point, Hanover had its humble beginnings. The facts behind Hanover History started from a small civilization and worked its way up the historical ladder as time progressed. It shares the same historical beginnings as that of Hamburg – one of the closest cities to Hanover.
Hanover History - from the 13th Century to 14th Century
Before the 13th century, Hanover was just a small community, the settlers of which were earning through fishing and boating since the village is located on the banks of the Leine River. By the 1200s, the village expanded into a relatively large settlement and by the 1300s structures such as churches were built. Add to this, a city wall and three town gates were made to ensure the safety of the growing city. As industrialization spreads in Germany, Hanover proved its significance in the trade game as it bartered goods with towns from the Northern Hartz Mountains.
Hanover History - Alliance of Hanover and the United Kingdom
After the Duke of Calendberg opted to build his residence in this village in 1636, he renamed his duchy to Duchy of Hanover. The duke’s descendants would later travel to Great Britain and one would even become the king of the mentioned country. George I, a descendant of the Duke of Calendberg, became the British King in 1714.
From 1714 to 1837, there was an alliance of crowns between Hanover and the United Kingdom. Viceroys became the representative of the King in Hanover.
On July 5, 1803, the Convention of Artlenburg was entailed by Napoleon of France. Changes took place in Hanover due to this Convention: the occupation of 30,000 French soldiers of Hanover; and the disbandment of the Hanover army.
The alliance of crowns between Hanover and the United Kingdom ended in 1837 when Queen Victoria ascended the throne. Salic Law Hanover stated that the throne could only be inherited by men and not women.
Hanover History - The 19th Century
The Electorate of Hanover was changed to the Kingdom of Hanover in 1814 by means of the Congress of Vienna. This change led to the expansion of the place towards the western bank of the Leine River. Hanover developed significantly after that. By 1883, the city’s district government was founded and became active.
Hanover History - From World War II to the Present
Hanover became an active member of the Nazi party persecuting and expelling or deporting the Jewish population in the city. At the end of World War II, the US army occupied Hanover. The city became a part of the Lower Saxony in 1946.
At present, Hanover History brought it as a Vice-President City of Mayors for Peace – an international organization that acts for the abolition and elimination of nuclear weapons. Its humble beginnings are as important as the history of Berlin known to be the capital city of Germany.
