Odense History, Denmark

Odense in Denmark is the third biggest city of the country. Its name was taken from the name of the Norse God Odin and Odense History revolves around religion, trade and culture. Odense has been known as one of the significant trading centers in Europe.

Odense History – Early History

The city of Odense was first officially mentioned in a letter written by the German Kaiser Otto III in 988 AD. Odense, which was still a town during that time, had already a diocese under a bishop. In addition to this, it is also believed that at around the same time, Odense was the center of the Odin Cult.

Odense History – Rise of the Merchants

The first 100 years following the Reformation, Odense persisted on developing its status as the heart of trading for the neighboring towns. Agrarian trading, such as exporting live farm animals, brought big fortune to the town. Subsequently, timber-framed infrastructures, which were mostly owned by the nobles of Odense, were constructed in the area.

During the mid-17th century, Odense suffered from both the Swedish Wars and the consequential tax problem. The authorities established a manufacturing resource for the unemployed and social radical groups and promoted production and overseas sales of products such as gloves. Although the state created ways to solve these problems, Odense never actually picked up from the economic stagnation until about the 19th century.

Odense History – Development and Industry

In 1803, the town of Odense was made into a port after the opening of its canal. The town roads were developed and at about the 1840s expansion beyond the borders of Odense was implemented. The town quickly extended its territory to the south of the river.

Odense is known to be the first town in Denmark to obtain modern water and gas works. Railways were built in 1865 and as a result, the conditions of the town were in position for speedy industrialization. Odense’s commerce revolved around textiles, food and beverages, metals, and irons. With this industrial expansion, residential places started to be constructed.

By the end of the 19th century, Odense built a Town Hall which was designed by C. Lendorf and JD Herholdt. The council of the town was dominated by the Conservative Party up until the year 1937 when the Social Democratic Party rose to power.

Odense History – World War II

During the Second World War, the Germans occupied Odense. In August 1943, a wide-range strike was held in the town which greatly played a part to the collapse of the policy of partnership with the Germans.

Up to this day, Odense History continues to be an inspiration to neighboring towns and cities in Denmark. It proves to be a powerful town because it managed to rise after every fall. To understand more facts on European history, explore Hamburg History and Copenhagen History.
