When we arrived at Kairouan, the city didnt quite look as the big important city of the islam in Tunisia. It seemed more than a area, focusing on tourism.

When we were looking for the famous mosque of Kairouan, a somehow dirty guy on a small motor bike wasgiving us signs to park at a certain place. We thought he would do this, because we were obviously looking for a parking space. We wanted to givehim an tip, but he said no no no, starting to lead us through the town. But he didn't guide us to the mosque, he showed us some traditional doors, meanwhile leading us to all the craftsmen of Kairouan, especially a carpetsweaver company. Just to give you an advice, refuse always to go by a local or talk about the price before, if you want to go with them.

It was really no real guided tour, and when we said we want to go back to the car, he said he wants to have now 25 Dinar for each person. That would mean he gets 25 Euro for a f....... merchant tour.

At that time we didnt want to stay in the city, because he got really angry. So we didnt see that mosque at all, but we got to know the arabic mentality!

Tunisia - overviewWalking the bustling main thoroughfare and alleyways of the Medina or the old town is like stepping into a 12th and 16th century marketplace. With its colorful and lively flea or street markets, historic sites, and plazas, wandering the narrow, winding streets makes for great adventure into the cultural heritage of the old walled city. Here you can find exquisitely crafted jewelry and ceramics or souks of carpets and perfumes. The Souk el Attarine or the perfume maker’s market is one such place where you can find great bargains on exotic scents and essential oils. The Zitouna Mosque or the Great Mosque is the major landmark in the... Read more »
