Although it is an industrial city, I really enjoyed Volos. The sea is impossibly blue there and the city by night from the surrounding hills is amazing.
The Archeological Museum of Volos is really great, exhibits include items from the Trojan War as well. Several of the oldest factory buildings changed function and became schools or museums, like the Silk Museum and Museum of Industrial Archeology.
Maybe the factories make it appear a little unfriendly but Volos is very pleasant and the people are very kind and helpful.
