The Genoese Lighthouse rises 26 feet tall to honor the Genoese merchants, who dominated the Black Sea during the 13th century when the city flourished as a sea trade center at that time. The lighthouse was built in 1860. Not far away from Ovid’s Square, in a narrow street, the Great Mahmudiye Mosque lies as the seat of the Mufti, the spiritual leader of about 55,000 Turks and Tatars living in the region of Dobrogea.
