Visiting the icon workshop of Kalambaka, Greece

On our way to the Meteoras we stopped in this little town, Kalambaka. Here is an icon workshop. After we entered this building we saw on the walls many icons, masks and little statues as well.
When everybody was in, a lady showed us how an icon is made from the beginning till it's finished in a few steps. We also could see how a man who was working there planed a piece of wood for a next icon. An interesting thing is that they use real gold not gold paint when they make one of these pieces of art. There is a very thin layer of gold (it looks like paper) which is used there.
After the demonstration we could go to the shop which was part of the building. They sold there many kinds of things: statues, china, little jugs, and icons of course :)

Recommended Kavala Guide
Kavala Sights
Travel to the quaint village of Orfani where another historical Byzantine castle is preserved in all its splendor. Surrounding the castle are several other ruins that only add to Kavala’s old-world charm and mystique. Hands down, the most renowned landmark in Kavala is the Panagia, a beautifully preserved district that had once served as the city’s capital. The traditional buildings scattered all over this majestic headland are triumphs in Macedonian architecture. Picturesque sceneries of the city’s seascape and the verdant gardens that litter the Panagia make the ascent towards the apex a stroll of a lifetime.... Read more »
