Valencia History

Spain Spring Trip 2008It was the well known conquistador Lope de Aguirre who plagued the city in 1561. The city was raided by the French pirates and they burnt the city hall and destroyed many important documents. There was a battle called the battle of Carabobo, which was fought to gain independence from the Spanish rule. These pirates burned down the City Hall and, due to this incident, Valencia lost many documents which were a proof of Venezuela and its history. Alexander von Humboldt, a German scientist, once visited the city and he estimated the population of Valencia to be around 7000.
