Shreveport Travel Guide, Louisiana

Multi activity in Shreveport LA US-overview

A cultural and gaming center on the Louisiana/ Texas border, Shreveport became a city only in 1871. It was founded in1836 by the Shreve Town Company to build a town near the Red river and the Texas trail. The Red River was used until 1914 when it became unfit to be navigated but the 1990s saw a massive clean-up and Shreveport has again become a shipping centre.

However, it is more famous for its many casinos lining the Red River which is the heart and soul of Shreveport. Casinos housed in riverboats recreate the glamour and mystique of the past while providing all the requisite thrills and excitement of modern times.

If gaming isn’t your cup of tea, walk across the other side of the neon-lit Texas Street Bridge and enjoy horse-racing at the Louisiana Downs. Shreveport offers the visitor an exciting mix of the larger-hearted Texan spirit and the exotic Cajun attitude. This unique blend of cultures tend to surprise the visitors who come here primarily to explore the vast musical history of jazz but are taken aback at the equally vast repertoire of blues, country and folk music also.

It is just not simply casinos but a totally family-oriented vacation which can be thoroughly enjoyed by the visitors. There are festivals galore to entertain the visitors from the time the weather becomes fine and there are days of dancing and music and art. Theatres, live performances, symphonies, museums and innumerable outdoor activities take place during this time.

The botanical gardens of Shreveport are ideal places to relax and there is fine dining on the waterfront and shopping. Indoor shows ranging from rib-tickling comedies to musical concerts are all the rage during not-so hospitable weather.

The famous Barksdale Air Show is a must on every visitor’s itinerary because here history turns into a fun experience. The Louisiana Boardwalk on the Red River has plenty of restaurants serving both local and international cuisine. Visitors also can have a gala time trying to spot Hollywood celebrities as Shreveport has become a key filming location for film productions and is known internationally.

Shreveport can get unbearably hot during summers but, for the rest of the year it has a temperate climate and visitors can enjoy the outdoors. Whether it’s an afternoon of indulging in some shopping on the riverfront or taking in one of the many restaurants there or cruising through the high-octane excitement of gaming, Shreveport has a wide variety to interest the visitor. Its musical heritage is a big draw for music lovers. Shreveport can be an interesting and enjoyable experience for the whole family.
