Lome Travel Guide – Location and Geographical Characteristics

Lome is the capital city of the central western African state of Togo that has an opening to the Atlantic Ocean. This Lome travel guide will tell you all the basic information you need about this Guinea Gulf city that functions as the country’s administrative headquarters and its main port. The main geographical peculiarity of the city is its location between the Atlantic Ocean at the south a 30 kilometer lagoon at the north, which separates lots of the city’s neighborhoods from the city centre. With an estimated population of 738.000, Lome grew and is still growing quite rapidly. The equatorial climate means that Lome has two rainy seasons and its proximity to the ocean makes the summer heat quite bearable.

Lome Travel Guide – The Local Scenery

The city population saw a rapid growth between 1950 and 1970, when it got from 30.000 inhabitants to 200.000. Investments made by the colonial administration assured the building of infrastructure, hospitals and schools, but in the following years, major companies and businesses settled here and investments started being made in all the wrong sectors. Railways were left to deteriorate and five star beach hotels were built instead. This led the city to the present situation when it is divided between rising problems of healthy urban living and garbage collection, the tendency of rural migration due to lack of food sources, a busier nightlife and alignment to larger and more important communication networks – all of which is set against very high social contrasts, with small houses and large corporate buildings. The closest African cities are Accra, in the neighboring country of Ghana and Lagos in Nigeria.

Lome Travel Guide – Colorful Lome

The most important income sources for the city are cocoa, coffee and palm oil and phosphates, but the merchandise usually takes routes that go through neighboring countries Ghana, Mali or Nigeria. Lome also has an oil refinery in the port. The University of Lome has come to be known in West Africa and the potential of the city is considerably growing due to the larger number of tourists that visit Lome. A very important detail in any Lome travel guide should be Akodessewa, the fetish market in Lome where you can buy voodoo dolls, but also the Lome Grand Market where you will find anything from fresh fruit and fish to traditional herbal remedies.
