Almeria History, Spain

Almeria, History – Early Times

There are a few people, and those are mainly historians, who know that the name Almeria comes from the Arabic language, meaning “The Mirror of the Sea”. Almeria History is closely related to its geographical positions. A well known leader on his name of Abd ar-Rahman III of Cordova decided to set up the city of Almeria in 955 in order to strengthen his defences at the Mediterranean Sea. The country’s past is thus influenced by Moorish culture which has left on these lands one of the largest Muslim fortresses of the region of Andalusia.

After its foundation, Almeria grew into an important harbor in which commerce and trade became the heart of the city’s activities. The silk industry gave an important impulse to the economical life of the city, thus turning Almeria into one the most strategic points in Europe.

Almeria, History – Middle Times

All these advantages drew the attention of the emirs of Valencia or Granada who focused their attention on putting a stop at Almeria’s boom. Thus, the city faced many attacks, many of them having a religious root, such as the Second Crusade led by Pope Eugene III. Taking advantage of this situation, Alfonso VII conquered this dry and rich land and thus in the 15th century Almeria fell under the domination of Catholic people.

The 16th century represented a particularly difficult century for this city and its inhabitants, as they had to face four devastating earthquakes. Even more, the Muslims were soon expelled from these lands and so the region slowly began to lose trace of its past.

The rescue came this time from abroad, when France and Great Britain decided to develop important businesses in the area, due to the large amount of iron discovered in these dry lands.

Almeria, History – Recent Times

When the Civil War came to Spain, Almeria was violently attacked by the Germans. The city faced once again a period of despair and poverty. However, its past experiences helped the locals not to give up and soon the city turned into one of the most important harbors in Andalusia. The agitated past left vivid traces on the town’s architecture and cultural heritage which attracted more and more tourist every year. On the other hand, agriculture became the main activity on the area, the region being known for its intensive production of vegetables.

Almeria History represents an evident proof that any drama can be overtaken, if one has belief and strength and the Spanish people surely posses these qualities. Just take a look at Granada Travel Guide and Malaga Travel Guide and you will get easily convinced.
