Perm Travel Guide, Russia

The city of Perm happens to be an important industrial city for Russia. It is situated in Perm Krai (one of the many federal subjects which are part of Russia) and it is also the administrative center for Perm Krai. This city is located on the banks of River Kama (which divides the city into two different parts) and in the proximity of Ural Mountains which are actually located in the European part of Russia. The word Parma was used to name this city of Perm. Parma when translated from the original Komi – Permyak historical language means hilly place which is completely covered with woods.

It was after the year 1991 when modernization hit the city of Perm and with this increased the modern methods of transportation of Perm. This city has its own International Airport namely Bolshoe Savino. This airport is also the major center for Perm Airlines thus increasing its importance. This airport connects Perm with many major international cities. This city also has its own Railway Station namely Perm – II station. The road network around Perm is well planned but of poor quality hence entering the city via roads might not be the best idea. If you want to enjoy water transport then you can use the Kama River Port which has recreational cruises to Moscow, Kazan, St. Petersburg, Tchaikovsky, and Volgograd.

As per the census of 2007 the population for the city of Perm was around 990000 inhabitants which makes it the sixth largest city in Russia. Perm is amongst those few cities of Russia which have experienced a downfall in population since 1989 when the population was around 1090000 inhabitants and as per the census of 2002 the population was around 1001000 inhabitants. This clearly reflects that the population of Perm has come down considerably in last few years.

The city of Perm stretches over an area of around 80000 square kilometers and this makes Perm as the third largest city in terms of area in Russia. The only cities above Perm are St. Petersburg and Moscow. Perm stretches around 70 kilometers along the River Kama. Along with River Kama the city has many other rivers which are located in and around the city thus fulfilling its water requirements.
