Kaliningrad was formerly called Königsberg. It is known for its historical significance as well a prominent city of Prussia. It was earlier capital of the East Prussia but got partitioned after the Second World War II.

History of Kaliningrad, Russia

The city was named as Kaliningrad based on an ancient castle Konigsberg which was constructed in the year 1255. It was built so as to pay tribute to the King Ottokar II of Bohemia. The king was known for his campaign in opposition to the Pagan Sambians. After the campaign, the city became the member of Hanseatic League and in the year 1457, it became the Teutonic Order’s headquarters. This city got the seat of Duchy of Prussia in the year 1525. Duke Albert of Prussia founded a Albertina University in 1544 and after that, this city became the centre of education. With the coronation in the year 1701, Prince Frederick III was made the King of Prussia. After the World War I, Kongsberg became the independent country of Weimar Germany.

Koenigsberg was renamed as Kaliningrad in the year 1947 after the unnatural death of Mikhail Kalinin who was the president of Supreme Soviet. At that time German’s population was taken over by the Russian people. The language of the Germany was also replaced by the language of Russia. After that the entire city was reconstructed and lead toward modernization. The Soviet Baltic Fleet became the headquarters of the city in 1950. Due to some strategic importance no foreign tourists were welcomed in this city.

Kaliningrad is situated at the front of Pergola River which meets at the Vistula Lagoon, an innermost inlet of the Baltic Sea. Khrabrovo Airport of the Kaliningrad is situated at 24 kms away from the center. This airport also provides some charter services to various important destination of Europe. A small Devau Airport is also located in Kaliningrad for the aviation purpose. Kaliningrad also has Chkalovsk naval air base at the eastern region.

Economy of Kaliningrad, Russia

Kaliningrad was known for the special economic zone in 1996. Manufacturers got good service tax and also broke the custom duties of the goods which were sent back to Russia. The region is currently known as manufacturing hub and also famous for the television industry. This country is the home place of BMW car plants. The major productive industry in this city is fishing, shipping and amber.
