Asuncion Sights and Landmarks Guide, Paraguay

Asuncion Sights – On the Green Side

The young and cheerful city of Asuncion in Paraguay has many sights to offer – be it the vivid beauty of the crowds in restaurants, clubs, or on the street, or the fantastic natural landscapes surrounding the city and the breathtaking monuments which testify for its past – Asuncion has it all and it can’t wait for you to discover it. The Paraguay River on which the city lies is ideal for a walk in spring or summertime, as you can enjoy the beautifully blossomed lapacho trees and maybe even drink a traditional tea made out of the same lapacho essence. The Parque Carlos Antonio Lopez and the Parque Independencia are also set near the river and typical dry and humid vegetation in the area is a joy for all tourists.

Asuncion Sights – On the Historical Side

If you were left with the impression that Asuncion was just about its green spaces you should think again and take the time to visit some of the main Asuncion sights, starting with the Museo Nacional des Bellas Artes to the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Pantheon of the Heroes. Each of these locations will speak loads about Asuncion and Paraguay’s history, art and national symbols. If you want to have an idea about the colonial life and architecture, you should visit the Casa de la Independencia, which is one of the last preserved examples of colonial architecture to be found in the city.

Asuncion Sights – On the Artsy Side

Lovers of all arts will find Paraguay’s capital delightful, as it has plenty of operas, theatres and concert venues, as well as exhibition and contemporary performance centers. The Arlequin Theatre, the Paraguayan-Japanese Center, the Municipal Theatre, the National Ballet, the National Symphony Orchestra and the City of Asuncion’s Symphony Orchestra – they all make up the cultural Asuncion sights. However, if you feel like minglling with the crowds the best place to go is Calle Palma, where most restaurants and terraces are located, but also in the biggest malls in the city, Shopping del Sol and Mariscal Lopez Shopping. If you want to take a day trip and enjoy some sun, your best choices are Nadi and Suva in Fiji.
