Guanajuato Travel Guide, Mexico

The city of Guanajuato is the capital city for the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. The city of Guanajuato is a historical mining city for Mexico and due to the presence of multiple historical sights United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) tagged the city as World Heritage Site somewhere in the year 1988.

In the past the inhabitants of the city had built a complex chain of tunnels so as to successfully receive water from the forests to the rivers. As of now, the government of the city is using these tunnels for vehicles and for pedestrians. The complex chain of tunnels have quickly become one of the important sights which tourists visit whenever they hit this city of Guanajuato. Another important feature of this city, which makes it different from the rest of the cities in Mexico, are the streets of the city which are made of cobblestone. The irregular designs of these streets has been used in many movies and have become the point of appreciation for the city of Guanajuato.

As per the census of year 2005 the population for the city of Guanajuato was around 71000 inhabitants. The city of Guanajuato is also the seat for the municipality which surrounds the city. The population for this municipality of Guanajuato was around 154000 inhabitants as per the same census of year 2005. This municipality of Guanajuato stretches over an area of around a thousand kilometer square.

The city of Guanajuato is situated around 400 kilometers away from Mexico City and this proximity of Guanajuato with the capital of Mexico has truly helped its economy a lot. The altitude of the city is around 2000 meters above sea level.

Although the city of Guanajuato is the capital city for the state of Guanajuato yet it isn’t amongst the top most populated cities of this state. The city of Guanajuato is the 5th most populated city for the state of Guanajuato. The other four cities which are above the city of Guanajuato in terms of population are Salamanca, Irapuato, Leon, and Celaya.

The city of Guanajuato is one of the very important cities for the country of Mexico. With no huge population and many historical sights, the city of Guanajuato becomes a must visit for those who want to have some rest.
