Cozumel History, Mexico

The Maya Dynasty is said to be the first who entered this land on which today the city of Cozumel is situated. They settled on this land sometime during the first millennium A.D. The presence of Olmec settlers was also suggested in the surroundings during that same period after many artifacts related to them were discovered. For the Maya Civilization the land was very important as they considered it to be sacred land for their moon Goddess. Almost all females used to visit the temples of this land. Although archeologists have found many remains of historical cultures on this land yet they say that most of the important remains were lost during World War II when the army cleared them so as to make a runway for their planes.

The first Spanish touch into the city of Cozumel was during the year of 1518 and slowly the Spanish started to bring down all the Mayan temples. Along with the Spanish came many diseases and hence only about 30 Mayan inhabitants (of the total 40000 inhabitants) were left in the land by the year 1570. This land remained deserted for years to come. It was the year 1848 when during some war again people started to settle down in this area and use this land as their hide out.

The city of Cozumel didn’t experience much historical changes after being struck by sever epidemic and unfortunately it couldn’t be a part of the important historical changes which happened after that in the country of Mexico. It was the year 1959 when the famous traveler Jacques Cousteau happened to have visited this land. He was surprised at the extent of natural beauty which was present in this land and hence he started to promote this land amongst his friends. He tagged the city of Cozumel as one of the most gifted places to enjoy scuba diving on this planet.

It was during the 1970s when the city of Cozumel was gifted with its own airport although the old runway built during the World War II was till now being used for passenger flights. This airport resulted in a huge jump in tourism traffic into the city of Cozumel and this was the time when this city got listed into some of the famous tourist hot spots on this planet.
