Aarhus, Travel guide – Location

Aarhus is one of the most important cities and ports in Denmark, located on the eastern part of peninsular Denmark at the Baltic Sea 53 miles from Odense and 65 miles from Billund. The city developed around the harbor and the coastal region, still most of the residential neighborhoods being located further inland in a beautiful forested area.

The scenery in Aarhus is dominated by the Baltic coast in the east with the marina, sandy and rocky beaches, low hills in the opposite side of the town and emerald green spots of forest within the city. Local topography also abounds in marshes and other wet lowlands perfect for the local characteristic flora and fauna.

As a result of its location on the coast and in the western part of Europe, Aarhus has a temperate climate with strong maritime influences characterized by long and cold winters and short but warm summers, perfect for visiting the city. Precipitations are present throughout the year, exceeding usually in July and August when floods are a common phenomenon here.

The hydrographic network is represented by the Aarhus River crossing the city, the waters of the Baltic Sea and by small areas of wet lands.

Local flora and fauna in Aarhus is represented by several characteristic species for the coastline, forestry and inland wetlands. The coastline houses different species of grass and the forests areas are mainly made up of beech, spruce, lichens and ferns. The fauna is just as rich and diverse comprising numerous bird species both local and migratory, various aquatic species as well as mammals and insects.

Tourists can also visit the local Botanical Garden in order to meet with the unique flora from the Jutland Peninsula but also with exotic plant species housed by numerous greenhouses.

Traveling by air is the fastest and most comfortable way to get to Aarhus on Aarhus International Airport located 35 km away from the city in Tirstrup. Your transfer to the city can be made by a bus offered by the airport, by taxi or simply rent a car.

If you travel from inland then you can get to Aarhus using the modern motorway E15 or by train. Another option is the ferry which connects Aarhus with all the other cities from the Baltic Sea shore and offers the best conditions for a safe and comfortable journey.

Within the city tourists can travel by public bus, car, taxi or they can borrow a bike for free from one of the special bicycle stands located all over town.

Aarhus, Travel guide – Population and Economy

Aarhus numbers about 300.000 people since it is one of the most populated cities in Denmark and part of the East Jutland Metropolitan Area. The large number of schools and universities in this area makes the population to be younger and better trained than anywhere else in the country and the number of students increases every year.

Most of the locals are Danish followed at a significant distance by the Lebanese and Turks. In matters of employment the vast majority works in the harbor, in agriculture, heavy industry and commerce.

Aarhus, Travel guide – Cuisine

Traditional cuisine in Aarhus is based on fish, seafood, locally grown vegetables and fruits, herbs and spices. A very popular option for lunch here is the open sandwich usually made up of rye bread and butter with fish, vegetables and different sauces. If you can go out for lunch some great options are the tartarmad, which is spiced raw beef with onion and horseradish, smoked salmon with shrimps and dill, leek soup with bacon, finker which is a paste of pigs’ organs and many other more.

Another traditional dish here is the rice porridge with cinnamon which is usually served for Christmas. Their favorite deserts are the kransekage, a delicious almond cake, different kinds of cookies and Rødgrød med fløde which are stewed local fruits served with cream.
