Korce Sights and Landmarks Guide, Albania

Korce may be a world away from Albania’s capital, but it sure offer many sights to visit. Although it is a relatively small city, it is still packed with some of Albania’s most remarkable tourist attractions. Just like Tirana, Korce has excellent museums, striking old churches and outdoor attractions waiting to be discovered by anyone with a keen eye for beauty.

Korce Sights – Religious Buildings

Religious edifices are regular Korce Sights. There are a number of churches and mosques in the city that add to its mystical appeal.

Church of the Ascension. Located in a village on the east side of Korce, the Church of the Ascension is one of the city’s best attractions. It was constructed during the 1300s with vibrantly-colored fresco paintings. UNESCO has dubbed it as one of the finest churches in the Balkans. The lucid painting about the Judgment Day is something to be noted along with other art pieces found inside the church.

Orthdox Cathedral of the Resurrection. This marvelous church was totally reconstructed in the 1990s after the Communist organization destroyed it in 1968. This is the biggest church in Albania to date and the second biggest church located in the Balkans. The pink façade of this church is remarkable and is very pleasing to one’s eye. The simple white interior perfectly complements the exterior color of the church. Enormous engraved wooden partitions and chairs carved with Albanian eagles should not be missed.

Korce Sights – Museums

Korce has several captivating museums worth exploring. These museums can be visited either in the morning or in the afternoon. However, since these places are sometimes closed during opening hours, visitors can make a call ahead of time to set the visit.

Archaeology Museum. The museum is accommodated in two buildings, separated by a courtyard made of cobblestone, constructed during the Ottoman Period. The Archaeology Museum displays around 1,200 artifacts originating from the Hellenic Period until the Paleo-Byzantine Period. Visitors should not miss the museum’s focal points such as the different Roman graves and the floor mosaic from the Byzantine Period.

First Albanian School. This school was first opened during the reign of the Ottoman Empire and is known as the very first school which taught courses in the Albanian language. It first opened in 1887 and soon after, a special girl’s school was unlocked in 1891. The school was turned into a museum in 1960. Since then, it displays records significant in pursuing the Albanian education. Also, a story about the Albanian alphabet is exhibited.

Korce Sights – Parks

Parks in Korce are ideal for relaxation and leisure. It is on these places that people, both citizens and visitors, will find a serene time while enjoying what good nature has to offer.

Park of Tears. This park got its name from an event that happened during the course of the city’s history. This is where women of the city said their goodbyes to men they loved, who had to join the war. Today, this is a small park in the shape of a triangle where people relax their aching feet or where they meet their loved ones.

Rinia Park. Also known as the Youth Park, this place shelters both the young and the old. It is located near a hillside and is surrounded by green plants and pine trees that provide shade from the heat of the sun. The park is a good place for strolling and should thirst and hunger befall, there are a few bars and restaurants in the vicinity.
