A general guideline when shopping in Batam – YOU BARGAIN, even at shopping malls, you BARGAIN! That’s a tip! Other than that, Batam is not the most up to date shopping paradise, but what you can get cheap is their local tidbits (keropok – which comes in all ranges of flavours; prawn, fish, squid, bittergourd, banana, apple, jackfruit, the list is endless). While you are there, be sure to get a massage, it is so cheap (Ranges from SGD$7 onwards, for a decent place), you’ll end up getting more. Not forgetting their pedicures and manicures too! Famous ones are at Nagoya Mall, where you can get a manicure at Rp 25,000 (~SGD$3) and a pedicure for Rp32,000 (~SGD4). Whilst at Nagoya Mall, be sure to stop by A&W (yes, our beloved waffles and root beer is now a mere 45mins away from Harbourfront Ferry Terminal –it beats going to Boon Lay from Pasir Ris by MRT, for all you Singaporeans out there).
