The old city was discovered by the modern world only in 1812. It was built by the Nabateans around 100 BC with the rock-cut architecture specific of the region in the era.
There are so many beautiful things to see there. It requires at least one long day to get to see everything, but it's just amazing. And, if you are tired, you can rent a donkey! ;)
There is the 1-2 km siq (tunnel in the mountain) through which you can reach the beautiful Treasury, the royal tombs, the theater, and the Roman city. The Monastery is a little far from the other buildings, so you will need some more time and energy to get there, but don't miss it!
The most beautiful thing in the whole place, I think is how the light changes the color of the stones on these buildings in every time of the day.
You can also hire a Bedouin guide at the visitor center at the entrance to Petra. It is not very expensive, but I think it's better if you go on your own.
Price:
JD21 for one day (about $30)
JD26 for two days (about $37)
JD31 for three days (about $44)
