Cape Coral History, Florida

Cape Coral, FL US - History: The Change From A Small Property To A Major City

Before it was referred as Cape Coral, the place was usually coined as the ‘the other side of the river’, and was not regarded as a special place. The land was, back then, known as Redfish Point. However, it was bought by Rosen brothers, Jack and Leonard Rosen, in 1957 and the city got its name.

By 1958, it was seen that there was a lot of development in Cape Coral and there were attempts to make the place more developed. Slowly a lot of development took place in the area, and it saw the rise of several buildings. The first building that was built in the area was a fourplex, which was built in a corner of the Coronado Parkway and the Cape Coral Parkway.

The development of the city was done by the Gulf American Land Corporation at a very pretty fast rate and it was noticed that residents began moving in to Cape Coral by June 1958. However, the residents, who had been the first to move into the city, faced a lot of difficulty. The land in the city was promoted quite effectively through every possible means.

It was seen that the property prices was $990, $1,900 and $3,390 respectively for home sites at water view, water front and river front. It was seen that in no time great number of people were visiting the city for taking possession of these properties. By the end of the first year, the figure for sale of properties was of nine million dollars.

With the opening of the Cape Coral Bridge in March, 1964 the land become more easily accessible, which resulted in more people flocking in to grab a piece of land for themselves. The bridge had two lanes and was used to link Cape Coral Parkway to the Braden-Sutphin Road, which is presently referred to as the College Parkway.

Cape Coral was finally incorporated into the Florida in the year 1972, when it had a population of over eleven thousand. With the incorporation, the city went on to be the third largest city in Florida.

Over the years, the city of Cape Coral has developed a lot and it is today considered to be one of the fast developing cities in Florida. To attract people to the city, it is seen that there are many additions being made to the city every year.
