Doha Travel Guide, Qatar
Doha: A Developmental Overview
Doha came into being in 1850 and has remained one of the prime cities of Qatar including its crown as capital city. It was earlier known as Al-Bida and later it was called Ad-Dawah. Before coming under British protectorate, Qatar had to fight the war against Bahrain. And finally Muhammad Ibn Thani Al Thani was made ruler of Qatar. Doha saw many educational developments and other business facilitation, when it became independent in 1971. In this continuing decade, the University of Qatar (1973) and Qatar National Museum (1975) came into being. Doha is one of the fastest growing cities among the Middle East. A home of exiles from South Asia, America, Arabian Countries, North and South Africa and including major European countries, it encompasses continental flavor in work environments. Despite being an Islamic capital it also has one church and two more under construction.
Doha, being a coastal area, had a sea product dependent economy. Much of the sea fishing and peal harvesting was done in Qatar and this eventually led to financial ruin, when Japanese Cultured pearls were launched on the world market. Doha recovered its status with the oil discovery and its production in the late 1930-40. This created a shift from a sea-product based economy to oil economy.
Doha currently has a population of 0.9 million and it’s growing rapidly. As the Government of Qatar is diversifying in other sectors to reduce the oil income dependency, the opportunities are being created for different sectors attracting people to Doha for good jobs and a better career. Presently Doha boasts of 50 towers and among them Dubai tower is the largest, which shows the potential of business development here.
Doha has ample support for sports and education. Some of the world’s prominent universities have off-country campus here. Doha has some big stadiums, MotoGP motorcycling circuits and tennis courts etc. and it was host to Asian Games in 2006. Doha has airways and roadways which facilitate transport and are very convenient for a tourist.
