San Miguel usually makes only for a short glance on the way to the one of the resorts that can be found on the north and south end Cozumel.

Few realize what a great opportunity to experience a vibrant, friendly and unique Mexican/Mayan culture the city of San Miguel offers with it’s safe streets, great food and of course family-orientated activities such as special shows and spectacles.

By being the largest town in the area, San Miguel benefits a lot from its relatively high population. Their occupant take good care of the city and always keeps it clean, thus the tourism industry prospers, San Miguel being a hub on the Riviera Maya.

You can visit, work or even live in the center of the city which is filled with all kinds of shops and restaurants. The streets are full of people almost every time of the day! The International Pier can accommodate all sorts of ships, from huge transport vessels to small, lighter cruise ships.

The heart of San Miguel is called la plaza and it is directly across from the docks. In the evenings, huge parties are hosted in this place and in weekends, free concerts are on in the evening. You can find that this plaza is densely populated by restaurants.

If you would head east, you would leave the tourist zone and enter the residential area. The best time to take a tour here would be in an early evening with a cool breeze, a purple sunset and of course, let’s not forget the fact that the city is almost 100 percent safe from crime. But, if you don’t have time to go visit on an early evening, remember to always and I repeat…always! Take a hat with you. The tropical sun is most dangerous and there is almost no shade for you to use as a cover.

Four blocks north of the pier lays the Museum (Museo). Possibly the most stunning attraction in this Museum is the second story open-air restaurant overlooking the water which can give you a breathtaking picture weather you’re gazing at the stars, or watching a new sunset or sunrise. Going inside the museum, you will be able to find displays of art from local artists and a small but also pretty exhibit on Cozumel’s history and heritage. A nice gift shop where you can buy souvenirs will complete the museum tour.

There are almost too many varieties of merchandise you can purchase from vendors throughout the city. Crafter items, handmade items and why not, pre-fabricated but original items.

A visit in the city of San Miguel will surely impress you in a good way and you’ll be overwhelmed by the history, the beauty of the places and the relaxing, easygoing atmosphere.
