Florence History, Italy

One of the places that have an interesting history is Florence, Italy. Florence already existed during the Roman Times. The Etruscans are the ones that ruled Italy during the 18th century B.C. to 59 B.C.

Florence existed during the time when Julius Caesar was in power and during 59 B.C he founded a colony in Arno’s narrowest area. Florence was established as an essential center for trading in the 3rd century A.D. by the Romans after defeating the Etruscans. The prosperous and peaceable lives of early people in Florence suddenly ended when the Roman Empire from the West disintegrated before the influence of the conquerors of the Barbarian from the northern Europe. This is the time when Dark Ages started and the reason why Italian unanimity was lost for almost 1400 years.

To end the tough times, during the 18th century, Charlemagne together with his Frankish troops defeated the last of Italy’s Barbarian kings. But, the reprieve was short-lived. During thanksgiving, a horrible mistake was made by Pope Leo III, which led to a more prolonged clash and disharmony. The Pope gave Charlemagne to the Holy Roman Emperor in order to secure the loyalty of Charlemagne.

Most part of Italy was managed by the Emperor, which lead to a consequent clash between the Pope and the Emperor that pushed the Italians to have their own kind of civil war, thus the loyalty of Florence people was divided into two groups. But these conflicts ended at the end of the 13th century as the Guelfs were controlled.

Finally, Florence had a successful economy because of the patronization of their own local product. Renaissance was founded by the members of the rich merchant group in the last part of the 14th Century. During the time when Medici’s grandson Lorenzo il Magnifico reigned, the movement on Renaissance was created in Florence. As time passes after Renaissance, Florence was controlled by several ineffective leaders. In the 19th century, during Italy’s re-unification, Florence was temporarily claimed as Italy’s capital and finally Rome joined the newly instituted Italy.

Italy’s history serves as another great thing to know during your visit in Italy.
