Surabaya Travel Guide, Indonesia

Surabaya is the capital city for East Java province, Indonesia. Surabaya was initially spelled as Soerabaja but later on, the official spelling was changed to Surabaya. There are multiple theories that are said to be the reason why the city received this name of Surabaya. The one which is mostly believed by the politicians is that of a shark and a crocodile that fought for supremacy. Sura stands for shark and Baya stands for crocodile. Hence the city received the name Surabaya.

Jakarta is said to be the most populated city of Indonesia while the city of Surabaya is the second most populated city in this country. As the city of Surabaya basically focuses on industrial growth, a huge number of immigrants from around the planet have entered the city thus mixing the ethnicity of Surabaya. One will find people from Europe, India, China, Malaysia, and Arab countries living and working in this city. The old city of Surabaya has expanded quickly to a modern city which is leaving a mark on the economical growth of Indonesia.

Suroboyoan is the language that is regularly used by the locals and on TV channels. Although people from other counties might use the language of their homeland, the local language is the one that is used in every business deal. Christianity and Islam are the most popular religions of this city. Some people do follow other religions as per their beliefs.

The city of Surabaya is slowly becoming an important trading hub on the International front as it handles all the trading works of Eastern Indonesia. Coffee, Sugar, and tobacco are the major products which are exported from the port of Surabaya. The huge shipyard of Surabaya makes the port city the busiest ports of Indonesia. As the city of Surabaya is the capital city for East Java province, it has become the hub for all political activities of the province. Many other government offices and various business centers are part of this city. All these truly increase the importance of Surabaya on the national level.

To add to these features is the Airport of Surabaya that happens to be the 2nd busiest airport in the country. All the major airlines have their flights running via this airport and it is the main center that connects the western region to the eastern region.
